FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Opening up Sunshine State Conference competition, the Nova Southeastern men and women's swim teams fell at the hands of the Tampa Spartans on Saturday morning at the UT Aquatics Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Both the women's (Jenna Johns, Cailey Friel, Caroline Oster and Amilia Nusbaum) and men's (Zachary Milke, Cory Klemm, Matteo Masiero and Alec Dawson) 400 medley relays finished runner up to begin the dual, finishing in 1:48.79 and 1:34.79, respectively.
- To conclude the meet, NSU women's 400 free relay team made up of Nusbaum, Emma Sundstedt, Oster and Johns) finished in second in 3:32.41. On the men's side, Dawson, Magnus Poulsen, Jonathon Yanello and Martin Hemminghyth grabbed second in 3:10.31.
- Overall, the women had six first-place finishes, while the men had five.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Sundstedt earned the first win for the Sharks in the 1000 free, finishing in 10:27.04, a solid 12 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. She also went on to win the 200 free in 1:53.89 and the 500 free in 5:00.11.
- Bernardo Abascal completed the 1000 and 500 freestyle sweep for NSU, grabbing first with his times of 9:44.24 and 4:47.07, respectively.
- Johns placed first in the 100 back in 58.00 flat and also in the 100 fly in 57.18.
- Alessandro Xella topped his competition in the 200 fly with his time of 1:54.72 and also in the 400 IM in 4:05.11.
- Suzanne Afchain grabbed the win in the 200 backstroke in 2:08.41.
- Masiero grabbed an individual win in the 100 fly, finishing in 51.01.
UP NEXT
The Sharks will remain in SSC competition but return to the NSU Aquatics Center on Saturday, Oct. 27 as they host Lynn and Rollins in a tri-meet starting at 12:00 p.m.
